What made you come into heavy metal?

Was there a special happening for starting to become a heavy metal maniac? I think, everyone of us can tell something about this...

SaxonThunder

How i became a metalhead? easy to answer that one; thanks to my little brother and Rhapsody. I never forget the day when i heard Emerald Sword and Rain of A Thousand Flames booming over the hallway. That is what got me into metal.

Ironhead

Interests in the 'dark side' since early childhood kind of led to the dark music as well. With a slow progress, not just a brief moment.

Blüdrayne

the video in this forum's thread with the topless girls made me cum... oh wait... into heavy metal you meant? ;)

My mum! She listened to Iron Maiden and Saxon all the time when I was little, so I picked up on that.

cambotero

my old brother with AC/DC Iron Maiden Metallica and V-rock (for Megadeth)

DeathFuckinMetal

From no one, just found it out all on my own. Heard Cannibal Corpse "A Skull Full Of Maggots" and thought this is some heavy brutal shit right here and the rest is history. Haven't looked back since. I may also add that i used to be (yes USED to but not anymore) into rap music from ages 14-18. I now REALLY regret listening to that shit and wish i had been listening to metal in my early teens. I am glad that i discovered metal and i can tell you that i am a metalhead for life and will listen to this music till the day i die.

It was my twin-sister! She bought the "nothing else matters"-single (S&M). On the B-Side there was "for whom the bell tolls"!! So it began :)

Adrian

My dad and brother are completely to blame. Metal is all I ever heard, eventually I found which bands especially appealed to me and my taste came into its own

hammer slammer

My Dad played me Black Sabbath's paranoid when I was around 5 years old, and from there I was interested in Heavy rock stuff (AC/DC, Sabbath, Rainbow, Motorhead) but it all kicked off when I was 9/10, when I heard the S&M version of Master of Puppets, and I bought the album straight away thinking it would be like that, and it was, ONLY BETTER.

Very similar story here with classic rock from my dad and two uncles when I was five. I was the only guy at school who listened to stuff like Sabbath, Hawkwind and Deep Purple (it was early to mid nineties). Really started to get serious when I was fifteen and my cousin gave me Live After Death on cassette.

Until about late 2004 I was listening to nu-metal and alternative rock, then my friend Albert showed me Acid Rain by Liquid Tension Experiment and from then on my world changed, that was the biggest catalyst for me into metal, there was no turning back after that. He probably doesn't know how big of an impact he's had on my life because of that one piece, we've been out of contact for some time but the next time I see him I will tell him for sure. Some metal bands I got into very early on were Metallica, In Flames and Helloween.

Deathcore.Is.Not.Metal.

My brother showed me Metallica and Pantera when I was in elementary school. Then in about 5th grade, I came across the Kataklysm/Dimmu Borgir split in his room, and I slowly started to listen to more and more metal bands.

My babysitter as a kid!
Between 1986 and 1989 the kid from down the street would pick my sister and I up from school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
He drove a VW Fox with stickers all over it, long hair, a white Jackson, and a kutte. On the way home from school in the car we would listen to Anthrax, Metallica, Megadeth, Faith No More and probably countless others.

When we would get home he would play guitar while I watched him and my sister watched TV. The dude was my hero. He gave me a mixtape when I turned 10, just before my family moved. It had Metallica, Faith No More, and Anthrax for sure- probably other stuff.

After moving, my sister and I got more and more into metal and it stuck ever since. My parents, especially my Mom, were pretty upset when I started bringing home Death and Emperor. By the time I was in high school, I had a VW Golf with stickers, a drumset and guitars, and long hair - but no battle jacket, those kind of fell out of style in the 90's.

Listeining to more aggressive Collective Soul and Smashing Pumpkins songs and saying "there's got to be more powerful music than this!!!"

well actually as a kid I eventually found bands like Tool, Static-X, and even Metallica. But I still never really was inspired by that stuff. Then I heard a song on a video game made as a co-op between Skinny Puppy and Type-O-Negative. For a bit, Type O Negative became my mainstay. But it was through them I discovered the Swedish band Tiamat. And that band opened me up to the European scene of the 90's. After finding a cd store that sold such bands and getting albums by Theatre of Tragedy, Dimmu Borgir, Summoning, Rhapsody, Saturnus, My Dying Bride and so on. All of that stuff gave me exactly what I was looking for. I threw out all my old pop-rock albums and have been into this ever since.

Nordgreen

I was introduced to Metallica by an old friend. I used to hate metal actually. After that i couldn't stop listening to metal.

Ironbound

My dad showed me Alice Cooper when I was three on Halloween. Listened to that for years. When I turned 8 I found Metallica then that led to Ozzy Osbourne, Dio and White Zombie. After that I just kept finding awesome bands.

meaningless

i always enjoyed this guitars in Queen ;) Some day..i checked daddys Vinyls and found Led Zeppelin - damn: More guitars!
..but that wasnt the final step...
many weeks later, at school, i was reading a interview with Europe - saw the guitars and thought: damn, guitars! I must check them out...after school i went to a record store..looking for Europe - and i found IRON MAIDEN!

I was falling in Love with Eddie :D and bought Live After Death -> Since the first Min. of this record - im into Metal :D

Well, I was not lucky enough to have any family members who liked metal. The majority are modern day hippies and my mom listened to Folk and Alternative Rock. I had always been kind of an angry kid who played a lot more rough then other kids did and everyone seemed to hate me for it. Then one day when I was 10, I saw these long haired kids at my school with Cannibal Corpse shirts. I thought they were awesome and when I talked to them they told me about all these bands I should check out. I started off listen to Judas Priest and Metallica and then advanced to Slayer. I then checked out Hammerfall, Death, Cannibal Corpse, and a bunch of others and a few years later I had started growing my hair out and wearing band tees. It was awesome because whenever I was angry, rather then break stuff like I used to, I could just blast Kreator and all the sudden I would feel a lot better. Then I eventually just became a complete metalhead and its been awesome ever since.

gambinaviina

Well, i became a metalhead because of my Dad, he showed me Ozzy Osbourne and iron maiden when i was about 8 years old. My Dad was a big metalfan in the 80's he had a long hair, but it was a mullet. These days my Dad don't dress into band shirts anymore and he is still true metalhead.
Thats how i became a metalhead myself.

BuriedAlive

Thanks to my dad and The collection of Heavy Metal Classics LPs of my uncle R.I.P.
My dad knows I wasnt a boy who like the "typical" music, I was like the Black Sheep in the family. He used to put a cassette when we went for a ride in car, with bands like AC/ DC and Black Sabbath. He knows I prefer hardest things, Rock Music, just like Queen and Led Zepellin, so one day that we went to his place of birth, a little cold and rainy town, in my grandparent's house, he show me some LPs of my uncle like Maiden, Priest and Kiss. He tolds me everything about my uncle and his true passion for Metal since he was a teen. That rainy day my dad and I listen together the whole 'Piece of Mind'I was totally speechless with that cover meanwhile 'To Tame a Land' was playing. Since that day my life totally change, what a nice and nostalgic remember. I'll never forget that day

Wolfspider

When I was a kid my uncles got me into Kiss, Ac/Dc, Queen and Led Zeppelin. I just progressed from there.

BabyEviscerator

I never really came into it. I grew up from when I was a baby listening to it. I didn't really start exploring for more bands until I was 7, when I heard Death and Slayer for the first time.
