Ok lets talk about this stuff. are black metal tapes good, bad, etc? When bands cd is cd-r is the booklet normally an actual booklet?
Rotten said: Thanx dude ... Even this lay out has changed slightly. And it will probably change once again. I have a lot of patches to choose from :) No, no front just yet. None of these patches in the pic are sewn on - I only sewed the back patch on last night. And im still waiting on a few patches to arrive in the mail. This will take a while to put together because ill only get to work on it when I have some spare time.

I dont see anything wrong with black metal tapes..
would you say its worth buying a black metal album on cassette?
release on CD-R? nothing wrong about it. Maybe the band had no label and wanted to release by DIY... and the price of the cd is cheap?
I obviously prefer LP's and Tapes, but it's currently easier to get things on CD. I've only just started collecting things and trading for tapes, because I had an older collection that was growing. I like the sound quality of CD's, but I really think the format and feel of tapes is interesting. The best however, is on wax...nothing beats's a big ol LP.
As long as the music is in physical form on a disc of some sort and I have the album art there, it's fine by me. Black metal tends to put me in a different state of mind, so inevitably I don't get to anal about what format it's on, I will even settle for youtube.
With everything going digital, its a shame that we're losing the customary physical piece. I certainly don't think tapes/cassettes or LPs are any different than CDs (other than maybe the sound quality and durability). I agree with Tico taht the "feel of the tapes" is unique. Something kinda draws me to tapes (cd's or lps) that were pre-owned that I see in a trading store. Always wonder how the person who owned it before me reacted and was affected when he/she first bought the album.
I prefer lp's and tapes but cd is good too! i have few bm tapes what has bad sound quality but i like them :D
The difference between CD's and CD-R's is...?
Cd-r is those blank disks you buy at the store to burn cd's for friends and what not lol of course im sure when a band releases via cd most anyways probably have some type of sticker on top of the cd
All I know is... if it were up to me the only format available out there would be vinyl, vinyl, and more vinyl.
They would also be cheaper (if it were up to me, of course).
fuck no! how do you think bands would make demo's? Vinyl would be impossible! Plus Tapes and CD's serve a great purpose. I love vinyl too but can't live without tapes or cd's altogether....
Well I can damn it! haha. But you do have a point about demos, so I'll make an exception for those.
analog for the goddamn win !!!
vinyl and magnetics !!! \m/
nowadays many recent analog releases were cut from digital. so the sound may be analog, but they're not from the original analog masters.
I LOVE Tapes. I just today bought the first to albums by Ukrainian band Dark Ages on Cassette
for tapes it really depends. sometimes they have lovely art, but sometimes not. i dont have a tape player so the only time i buy cassettes is for stuff that's reasonably cheap and looks cool.
i like demo-tapes, i like demo-CDR's...but depending on the DEMO-thing...im still prefering TAPES.
No matter if Black/Death/Thrash..etc.
A demo is a demo :D and i want it on tape with a nice booklet.
A total NO-GO is this : hey, i have a demo - pls download it HERE...or THERE..pppppfffff
often the band cannot afford international distribution and dont have a choice but to distribute digitally. it's also more convenient.
+1, until a label signs on with a band, or there is some collaboration with a distributor, a band often has to promo early material either by live recordings uploaded to youtube or via digital files. Most bands tend to wait though until they have the means to release material either on LP or tape. Either way I don't care too much...as long as eventually down the line, physical copies of the music are able to be purchased.
well said! But im a old ignorant asshole on this point, sorry man. 1988 - nearly no1 had Internet and many many bands from this time made their way ANYWAY. I dont think young testament, entombed, exodus, metallica.or whoever..had MORE money..then the kids today...
Maybe they should buy 1 less iphone..and invest the money in a DEMOTAPE...damn it..
..u can call me ignorant for that point..its ok ;)
I think the only difference between CD and CDr is that CDr is the recordable CD bought from a store? I've made a 100% legitimate looking release just by purchasing a few things from Office Depot, and making a trip to Kinkos for glossy finish booklets. If it is well made, you can't really tell if someone put it together in there house/apartment, and not a record label's press or manufacturer, or whatever.
I have Apraxia's 2004 split CDr from Hallucination'Zine, and it really looks like I could have done a better job applying the disc sticker. But the disc is fucking awesome, it's like solid black like a PS1 game disc. It's the most badass CD I've ever seen.
As for tapes, I've recently discovered how fucking awesome it is to get those. Tapes are so fucking dirt cheap it's ridiculous, and there's something just so magical about putting it in a tape player, and fucking crusty BM flies out. Although I only have two real serious metal tapes. I don't think I'll get too many tapes, just ones of bands that I am a fanatic for. I have Apraxia's first two tapes from Graveyard Silence Productions. And it's bizarre to hold them in my hands. Because they are so rare, I'm glad I ended up with them, because they're going to be taken care of. And I'll only play them once: inside a tape to mp3 converter. So I can listen to them again and again, without cycling the tapes more than once.
There is something interesting about old BM tapes, and a similar idea applies to early 90's video games. There weren't exactly "rules" about production or recording quality, or the way most shit today sounds, all fully polished and crystal clear. Like there were no rules about old video games that made them easy enough for everyone to understand, like the shit being cranked out today. Game developers actually had to invent the way their games interface was going to look and behave, and what was going to be normal, or unusual. Because they were doing something that wasn't already done for 20 years. Games like the first few Elder Scrolls games, or the Lands of Lore series, Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM, etc.
Like the clicky sounding drum machines of old demo tapes, from bands such as Gontyna Kry or Nokturnal Mortum.
A really good example of a quality I like about tapes, is a track from the 1994 tape of the ambient band Cernunnuos Woods:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5oaKYUmrck
It goes very well with the pioneering feel of olden virtual worlds like that of early Elder Scrolls:

"And I'll only play them once: inside a tape to mp3 converter. So I can listen to them again and again, without cycling the tapes more than once."
Good idea....I've only just started gaining more underground punk and some black metal tapes and I now realize there really is that whole physical playability factor, eventually they will run down...so it would be good to collect and then listen to them elsewhere via a different format and at times the sound will be a bit more clear, but mostly it's about conserving the items.
I think Blink 182 is the best black metal band hands down.
Wacken Open Air 2000 - I got a demo on CD-R from LAY DOWN ROTTEN,
IMO a nice idea to promote, better than to upload the shit
Fuck..yes - RIGHT!!!!
Found a bunch of bands tapes I plan to buy in the near future. tapes are really great in my opinion. alot of times I notice tapes come with tracks not on the d or vinyl release.
