Religion (nothing too serious)

Plague
Sun, 17/06/2012 - 16:05

Just out of curiosity, what's your religious beliefs? Not trying to start a whole debate/discussion of beliefs here, just more like a poll sort of, to see what background metalheads tend to come from. No need to explain, just list what ur beliefs resemble closest to, whether it be Christian, Atheist, Pagan, Wiccan, Satanist, Hebrew, Islam, ...whatever.

Me: born and raised Catholic...but i don't hold strictly to it.

ManOboy

born and raised muslim, but i aswell dont hold strictly to it.

BlackMetalRights

I came from a Christian home, but I don't tolerate it.
I just don't like it! It's so... fake.. Just the atmosphere, it's supposed to be all nice and happy, but it's just so fake! I don't oppose god, don't get me wrong. But I really hate religion, in any shape, way, or form.

I can go on and on, but my fingers hurt from studding my leather xD

Plague

Ha..no reason to go on and on... trying to avoid this turning into a whole religious discussion anyway. Studding ur leather is better time spent :p

BlackMetalRights

I know, I don't get offended one bit!
And yes it is!

jeremybassmetal

Not really raised religiously and I'm 100% against organized religion (believe whatever you want, don't make others believe your bullshit)

mayhempunk666

Raised Roman Catholic, hated it. I find Christianity as a whole fairly reprehensible, teachings and theology. I despise all right hand path organized religions and the Church of Satan. Im not going to go on about the rest. It would take too damn long

Metal_James

Atheist born and somewhat raised (in the sense that my family never really talked about god existing or not, and we never went to church...)

IronMason

Dude same!

Blüdrayne

Born and raised protestant, though never especially spiritual.
Right now i'm agnostic, not particularly spiritual or religious.
my personal philosophy is much like other people's religion i guess.
as in it guides my actions.

I believe that through self determination and ultimately control over myself, I can achieve all things.

I'm 100% against ORGANISED religion, but i'm actually in favour of religion as a personal moral compass. but its not the thing for me.

ShieldbitersValhalla
mayhempunk666

best input anyone will give on this topic....hands down

ShieldbitersValhalla

Hahahaha

Blüdrayne

out of curiosity, do you ever have problems reconciling your religion with your interest in paganism?

ShieldbitersValhalla

Not really. I wear my Mjollnir occasionally, and I have great respect for cultures, and I find Germanic and Slavic language, history, and pantheons to be fascinating. I think people lose touch with their roots too much. I know I'm not the only one like that; I have a friend who I've actually met in person, who also likes Kroda, Nokturnal Mortum, Graveland etc., and he's Christian. He's been to the Cornerstone festival a lot.

Back in highschool, when I was like ultra NS, I put a lot of thought into trying to reconcile with things I was learning, and the way I was raised. It's not something I explain to people every day, but I've figured where I need to be right now. I just don't try to tell people how they should live their lives, and I guess I just go about my business and be good to those who deserve it. I'll just say though, I really enjoy old ways, but when people unprovokedly threaten my culture, I tend to get radically defensive. Thus, many conservative, right-wing, and outright NS bands have appealed to me over the years.

Edit: I actually don't consider myself part of a religion. I guess if it must be labelled, non-denominational. So to answer your question, no; I'm pretty comfortable with being interested in Paganism.

Edit II: The easiest way for people to understand what I think:

Adrian

There's no way I can top that post, but I am the same

BlackMetalRights

hahahaha that made my night!!

lak89

I have no religious beliefs and I'm comfortable, nor do I condemn the practice of religion, whatever floats your boat, just don't preach it on me.

almostwilt

Raised with the "Native American" religion/spirituality, then growing up realizing how mindfuckly stupid it all is, just seemed like some people high on acid telling how the world/plants/people/animals/ insects etc etc began along with other stuff. But now im just an atheist, hate religion from what its all done to this world.

hammer slammer

Agnostic. Open, yet not entirely convinced.

Untenanted-I-Gloomoire

Born and Raised a Jehovas witness but when i was about 7 my parents stopped so us kids could be more open and free when we grow up. But my godparents and relatives still are.

Mental-Vortex

I'm an atheist, but both my parents are christians (not very strictly though). They never really tried to convince me to also believe in god.

meaningless

<--Atheist. but i like my Nihilist-Shirt anyway ;P

Ironbound

My parents never tried to push any religion on me, they let me choose for myself. I tried becoming a catholic/christian when I was younger (all my "friends" were and I felt pressured.) but I never could get into it or actually believe it for myself. As I got older and found out more about it, I realized a lot of the bible's "teachings" are actually really sick and twisted. So I decided I was an atheist.

Maddolis

Raised Catholic, now I'm strongly atheist.

Plague

So far, seems like a lot of Atheists.. not surprising of course.

LaUlvenDrepe

I just despise religion, period. All of them. However, I am not an atheist, I am an agnostic.

CEROXER

Aum Shinrikyo / Scientology....

ThrashLikeIts86

Atheist/agnostic, my parents never really taught me any religion when I was younger.

BlueEyedBeast

I find myself somewhere between paganism and pantheism.

Deathcore.Is.Not.Metal.

mayhempunk666

i somewhat find myself leaning towards this as well, but i still find it hard to fathom worshiping something that isnt myself. not in the conceited way that sounded

Deathcore.Is.Not.Metal.

I'm nothing really. I've taken interest in Slavic Paganism, however it's hard as hell to discern the bullshit from the truth. That is probably the biggest thing holding me back at this point. But in the meantime I'm not practicing any religions, but I'm definitely NOT an atheist. Even Christianity has more sense than Atheism to me.

Ironhead

Atheist since a kid. I find some religious beliefs very interesting but can't get into them personally. Christianity I despise for all the horror it has caused on people like me in the dark past (and still does but not so effectively).
"Preaching peace 'neath the shadow of a knife, a papal reign of terror, slaughter in the name of Christ"

Blüdrayne

...and proud. ;)

WolfHammer

Godless Heathen and proud of it!

Nordgreen

The funny thing is: I forbid religion and have no opinion about religion. And this is serious! I sing in a churchchior, because i earn money and rehears my sing skills. :P

Necrosathanas

Born and raised with no religious pressure. Completely free. I totally despise Christianity and Islam. Behead those who insult the religion of peace. Yeah, right.

Personally, I'm an atheist. The darker side of religion still tends to interest me, such as satanism.

I just believe in myself.

No Gods, No Masters.

ToxikAssault

I'm Agnostic Atheist. Why Agnostic Atheist? This quote from Carl Sagan may help to understand:
"The idea that God is an oversized white male with a flowing beard who sits in the sky and tallies the fall of every sparrow is ludicrous. But if by God one means the set of physical laws that govern the universe, then clearly there is such a God. This God is emotionally unsatisfying... it does not make much sense to pray to the law of gravity."

Thrash is my busines

Born and raised catholic,i never liked it always hated church, boring place to be and i just dont care about religion

Blüdrayne

I don't need no Santa Claus
Don't believe in fairies no more
Don't need to go to confession
I'm already trying to fight depression

:D

R.J.

Atheist. Religion had its time and place, but so many of life's questions can be answered today by modern science. No one knows how the universe came to be, and the way I see it, intelligent design is just a convenient way of making sense of something we very well may never understand. I was raised in a Christian household and attended church every Sunday for a good portion of my life. As a kid, I waited and waited for God to show himself to me. He never did. I finally realized that it was all such bullshit. I no longer waste any more of my life feeling guilty for every little thing that the Bible claims is a sin.

quixotic

Atheist, although I can imagine that there is maybe a higher power, but this is necessarily not a God most people would expect it to be.

Well, and here are my thoughts about religion in common: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8QgyLQaV-k&feature=related

Blüdrayne

well if you're open to the possibility of a higher power, wouldnt that make you agnostic instead? atheism means you believe that there is definitely no god.

quixotic

If their are any empirical facts that show the existence of something that differs everything else and if that thing can be understand as a unmoved prime mover, the end of the causal-chain, then I would accept that. But it's not my task to disprove a god it's for the believers to show that there is something. Nothing has convinced me so far, ergo I don't believe in any religion.

Röngetus666

Raised to be christian and now it disgusts me.
It raises hell everywhere you but your eyes on so thats why i hate the shit you call Christianity.

kertalaaki

Atheist. I don't have any problems with religions or religious people. I think that everyone has right to believe in something if they choose or want to. That's just not for me.

LaUlvenDrepe

It's interesting how many of you point out that you were raised to believe something, yet later on you strayed from the intended "path."

I find that cool because it was the same for me. One of my uncles is a Christian pastor. He and the rest of my family obviously believed in God and wanted me to do so as well (like many kids, I went along with it until I was like 11 or something, just to please them).

I think it's ridiculous how adults try to raise children with an intention to mold them in their own religious image and beliefs. I personally think that is wrong, and that while it is obvious that the parents' beliefs will have an effect on how their children feel on the matter, we should teach kids to keep an open mind and allow them to choose their path through growing up and life experiences. I don't think you should try to teach kids religion. It's not like they truly understand it anyway, no matter how many Sundays you take them to church.

I remember my two little cousins (my pastor uncle's daughters) while growing up. They were brainwashed into the crap that they believe, having it forced upon them. One of them really liked to lie when she was young, often breaking stuff around the house and blaming it on her defenseless younger sister who was afraid to say that the other one did it. The younger one would get blamed and punished (sometimes spanked), while she just lied herself out of the situations... I told my uncle once and since I was not a devout Christian in his eyes (apparently saying you believed in God was not enough) I was the one that was lying, because "Christians don't lie." I told him "well that's all your daughter ever does."

Fucking tool.

Plague

That right there is an example of hypocritical self-righteous deceit.

LifeOfDeath

Well said! Small children don't have the ability to question and doubt what their parents tell them. I think it's pathetic and very sad when parents make their small children to believe that kind of crap.

Of course I understand that everyone wants to tell their children what they believe is the truth but the point is, they should wait until their kids are old enough to think with their own brains.

NocturnalOccultist

Catholic! just dont care about the rules or anything, but i just wasted one hour every sunday by listen to these religous followers!

Doctor Butcher

+1 same here

Slaughter Lord

Raised Protestant, now Agnostic. I'm interested in some Spiritualism but I can't believe.

almostwilt
DonDotyDarkAngel

Christian I guess, not strict at all though on that belief. I just like to believe there is a God somewhere, and were not all created from randomness haha. It's all good though, metal unites us all, I think religion should never get in the way of having fun and living how you want. Cheers everyone.

LifeOfDeath

I'm an atheist. My parents tried to raise me to be a christian but obviously they failed. I abandoned the church just when I turned 18 (in that age it is possible to leave the church without your parents permission). I'm happy that I never had to pay any taxes to church :P

Deathbanger

Was some what raised Lutheran.

Now I am a practicing Neo-Pagan/ Heathen (Norse mythology/like half the metalheads out there these days...).

I feel strongly connected with the eddas and my forbearers and I don't really like discussing it. Religion should be a private activity.

I find it immensely disheartening that my ancestors beliefs are becoming another trend for people to latch onto...

blackstar1965

Baptised Episcopalian, but when the people at the local church started giving my folks the heebie-jeebies, we stopped going as a family. After my family moved my mom started going back to the Greek-Orthodox church she went to when she was young (I'm a bit Greek, a bit Cherokee, and a whole lotta awesome).

I'm basically Agnostic with Atheist leanings. I'm open to the idea of a system of beliefs and have considered converting to Judaism. My problem is, I'm too rational and can't help but think that all religion is preposterous.

I would like to believe in SOMETHING and know that having something like that at my core is a good thing, but I just don't.

SaxonThunder

Iam ásatrú, now look it up because iam tired of writing it down time after time what it is and what we do.

Tico Tyrant

I am embracing central american pagan cultural heritage..especially symbolism, lessons and literature relating to 'espiritu de los ticos'. I am also some what interested in the theory of gnosis and I explore the theories surrounding this. *I do not* embrace or support any form of desert variety theism, but I do not preach to those who do not preach to me. I show respect to people who practice a faith in their own way, calm and non intrusive....which sort of leads me to the fact that I really don't like religion (satanism, christianity, sikh, etc) when it becomes very organized.

I will say this to get it off my chest, I have zero respect for any religion that promotes a law system or cultural stigma that degrades women, this includes Islam and sharia law.

I am quite interested in Nordic and Germanic culture, paganism and some aspects of Asatru.

I explore everything else that is of the darker side of my mind and view on the world, in my own private way....hence forth, fuck anton la vey.

well...that about sums it up.

Oh yes, not religious..but I do believe in realism.

mayhempunk666

FUCK MING THE MERCILESS!!!!!!!

Blüdrayne

then would this not mean you agree with a religious system that promotes laws or customs that degrade men instead of women?

Tico Tyrant

No, in fact it does not mean that, because you are attempting to imply that by me stating one thing in my thoughts, I am supporting the exact same thing for the opposite sex.

-The reason why I take particular case against religion/law systems that target women, is because of certain sociological, cultural and political ideas I've been raised to promote, accept and learn about in North America, despite the fact I am an immigrant from a Central American country.

-While global rights for woman are debatable, given the fact certain societies function on different principles, this is the year 2012....mistreating and deliberately stripping women of the right to live comfortably, simply due to a religious mantra, or because of some pseudo law system, not only disgusts me..but infuriates me. The fact that men in these situations seem to hold absolute power, over what they consider "dogs" lower than dirt....leaves me feeling nauseous and truly sad about the state many areas still function in. It's time to fast forward and embrace a certain basic system of rights for all people, sharia law and Islam does and will try to chain this concept down, like a rusty shackle that stinks of piss.

Tico Tyrant

You'll pardon me for becoming so passionate about it...
in terms of religious ideas and religious related law systems that abuse rights for men in a major way, please tell me one...other than some sections of Christianity, I was not aware of one that truly targets men.

Blüdrayne

i cant say for sure about religious institutions targeting men. the only thing i can think of is polyandry in nepal, but this is mainly because inheritance law favours men there.
but i feel cultural systems often favour women, systems which influence laws and thus lead to a society where men are in an inferior position.

Blüdrayne

well no i'm not trying to imply that you support the converse. i'm using rhetoric to provoke thought on gender roles.

yes, it is true that in many societies women occupy an inferior role, and unjustly so i agree.
however in many societies women actually occupy a superior position. Women may have more rights under the guise of "Protection of the law". for example, divorce laws often favour women.

thus in a way the current law system in many countries could be construed as one that oppresses men. I'm a believer in equality. but equality doesnt mean only sharing the good points but not the bad.

wehrmacht4000

My family(well my mom and me) was never really religious at all. My dad was a mormon and my other aunts all married jewish husbands so they converted to Judaism. I don't follow any religions nor do I really believe in god however I do find a lot of Pagan life beliefs really interesting. Though I don't think it would make sense to call myself a Paganist since again, I don't believe in a higher power.

lambofgodfan00

I have faith and belief in God and definitely Spirituality, but I'm NOT a fan of organized religion.

BruteAxe2011

Christian. Don't ask my history. It's way too long and complicated. LOL!!!

RedRays

Born and raised as a Muslim but my ideas about religion started to change when I was around 15. Personally, I do believe in God, I've always did, but since Islam has almost no respect to women, I do not follow it now and I don't do anything it wants from a Muslim to do. I just don't want to give even a single fuck about a religion which only cares about men and their comfort. Yet, I can't really express my thoughts about Islam in my own country since people here are not really used to hearing that kind of stuff. I just don't want to bother myself with narrow minded people who firmly believe in something without interrogating it.

Blüdrayne

tbh, a lot of it depends on how you interpret it. i've read many verses in the quran as well as some in the hadith that focus on treating women with respect and such. but also others which dont seem to fair. and to be fair, these verses were written a long time ago and such views were radical for their time.

RedRays

Well, it might be. But we're in 2012 now. I personally don't think that Islam is a suitable religion for today's lifestyle. For sure, like every religion it has its benefits and some good sides but bad sides of it are way too many. For example, in Islam, it's free to marry 4 different women. Does that sound fair or make any sense? I don't think so. That's only one thing, there are lots of other things to humiliate women.

Blüdrayne

well iirc that was done to improve the status of women, so there wouldnt be any women unmarried at an old age. which would mean she wouldnt be able to support herself. but yeah, a lot of it doesnt make much sense now.

RedRays

"A lot of it doesn't make much sense now" that's exactly what I say. Everything has an explanation, of course, but this one is just not acceptable in today's world.

truiu

I'm an atheist. Don't believe in anything super natural. Both of my parents are atheists, but my mother do believe in stuff like ghosts etc.

I have the short sleeve version of this. - Funny story, I wore this shirt one day and then later wore a different shitty gray shirt to bed that night, I woke up for whatever reason in the middle of the night and noticed holes in my shirt. They're just the cheap Mad Patcher ones...The Mercyful Fate one is okay because it's just the name in white, but the other ones look pretty crappy, I'll probably replace them with something else at some point.
