i used to go to the gym every now and then but i can never stay commited. i mean im 18, 5'11" and i only weigh like 127 lbs, i should probally work out and eat more protein.
Blüdrayne on
well thats not too bad. you are skinny, but you're only 18. so if you want you could probably catch up in future. i regret not doing this more when i was younger, tbh.
Blüdrayne on
oh yeah. anyone here head of/tried 5/3/1? i'm just reading up on it and it sounds interesting. but i dont really understand it too well.
Marci on
I've only been doing body weight exercises for quite some time because I can't afford a gym membership yet.
Blüdrayne on
yeah i used to be like that too. unfortunately i realised bodyweight exercises could only take me so far, and i would achieve hypertrophy faster if i tried weights. i still have a gym membership that can be cancelled in 2 weeks if the cash or time runs out but thankfully i havent needed to yet.
mind you, i've sacrificed almost everything else in my life to be able to afford the gym. i quit smoking, drinking, going out with friends and eating out in order to be able to work out. its making me feel like a cleaner person and a better person, so i think its worth it.
what kinda bodyweight exercises do you do?
pushups/pullups? planks? dips?
Marci on
I guess I could never sacrifice as much as you but it looks like I'll have a job as a carpenter in a few weeks, so then I can finally go to the gym.
I'm doing dips and several variations of pushups and I'd like to do pullups too, but I can't put a bar anywhere (door frames are too weak). I don't think I need to do exercises for my legs because I'm trampolining twice a week and I cycle around 40 kilometres every second day.
Blüdrayne on
you cycle 40km every other day? thats really good dude. its probably way more than i can complete even once. my cardio is horrible. i'm not doing much of it at this stage, because i'm trying to focus on gaining muscle mass now. i will need some serious cardio, but probably not for at least a month or 2 more.
ever tried planks? i used to do several variations of planks, because i have back problems so i felt isometric exercises would be more appropriate for me.
Marci on
Not yet but I'll give em a try during the next session
Kuivausrumpu on
I use to have back problems too. You should try to do some Push presses, cable pulldowns, cable seated rows, deadlifts. Specially these Push presses, they help for back problems. Atleast did for me :)
Blüdrayne on
i havent tried push presses before, so i'll go look into it. mine are problems of the lower back, so form is very important. i was actually looking into learning how to do deadlifts properly actually. i'll ask at the gym tomorrow. thanks!
Kuivausrumpu on
Yeah the push presses will help your carriage a lot, and also help backproblems :) Deadlifts are really good for lower back, yeah no problem!
Maddolis on
Even if all you're looking at is bodybuilding, deadlifts are a necessary part of a proper workout routine. Deadlifts and Squats dude!

Does lifting a beer count?

haha

My cock is 12" and I bench 500 lbs.
BeefCakeAssThrash on
mainly dumbell curls with 15kg 'til I can't lift it up anymore and it rlly starts hurting. music always helps! some Medieval Steel or Lizzy Borden always does the trick haha
Blüdrayne on
lolol. for me death metal works best. slow, grinding old school death metal like obituary or jumpin' jesus.
SAATANANVITTU on
well, i try to workout every day, but i'm not too strict about it. i do dumbbells, some boxing with em, shoulders, triceps, abs and back. i also go jogging every now and then but should probably do it more often ::D
Blüdrayne on
isnt boxing with dumbbells really bad for your form?
i mean, the act of punching is supposed to be a plyometric one. so doing it with dumbbells isnt a very good habit if you do it too often.
BeefCakeAssThrash on
you're not supposed to do it everyday, indeed. then again, she doesn't
Blüdrayne on
yeah i used to do so occasionally to add strength to my punch, especially the jab. but you guys might want to consider using elastic bands for resistance... much better for your form, generally.
Blüdrayne on
yeah, thats great! half of the reason why i lift weights is for fun too actually. i like lifting heavy shit lol.
LikkedbyDeath on
I lift twice a week at the gym. It's lots of fun! :)
I hope more chicks will start hitting the weights instead of spending forever on cardio. It does NOT make you bulky if you are a woman, because we simply lack the testosterone to naturally build such big muscles.
Blüdrayne on
well the theory is that hypertrophy (muscle growth) only occurs when you lift 75% of your (1RM) 1 rep max. this usually implies less sets, because if you can do many sets of that, you've misread your 1RM. therefore, doing light weight with several sets usually causes fat burning instead.
I'm not 100% sure how, of course. but yeah, strength training doesnt automatically equate to an increase in mass.
LikkedbyDeath on
I once read somewhere that doing many reps with light weights is more like cardio then strength training, so the fat burning theory would make sense. An increase in muscle mass is also the byproduct of a combo of a high protein diet and high resistance training. People (especially women) shouldn't shy away from the heavier weights, they are not going to end up looking like a bodybuilder if they don't change their diet to go with it...
Blüdrayne on
the theory is that for every pound of body weight you need a gram of protein. thats the base amount you need to put on muscle, or maintain the amount of muscle. which isnt as easy as it sounds, tbh. its hard if you're used to an asian diet which is traditionally high in carbs and low in protein. then there's also the perception that milk is supposedly only for kids, which is really weird.
Maddolis on
That's not true. Kai Greene, one of the bigger bodybuilders out there curls something like 15kg for plenty of reps. Really small weight because bodybuilders don't need to lift big to get big, it's mostly form and plenty of reps.
Blüdrayne on
you see, thats because they already have the size. they're doing it for the definition. i dont think he got to this SIZE by lifting 15s, because after a while the body will get used to it and you wont get the strain on your muscle. bodybuilders arent trying to get big in the first place.
oh, and if anyone doesnt know who kai greene is, watch this. its a VERY useful video, and his ideas on form are very good. the concept is that improper form doesnt isolate the specific muscle, so you arent getting the most out of each movement.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8wZNGL4iA4
Maddolis on
They can continue using the same weight so long as they increase the number of reps over the same period of time, hence increasing the work load. Hypertrophy occurs when a heavy workload has been put on the muscle, whereas your 1rm's have more to do with the training through your central nervous system, hence why Lamar Gant could deadlift 300kg at 60kg.
Blüdrayne on
it does kinda make sense in that youre still working the muscle to failure. it kinda sounds like drop sets, except it takes longer and seems more inefficient. when you say over the same period of time, do you mean curl faster? because this is a totally new idea to me.
Maddolis on
Yeah, ie if you're curling x for 10 reps over a minute, then curling x for 11 reps over a minute will be a higher workload.
I tend to do working sets of 4-6 for powerlifting/strongman training anyway, and haven't curled in a while but I've done my reading and it's good info.
Blüdrayne on
...and yeah, its definitely not LIKE cardio if youre doing it like kai greene. :D
but i guess what he meant by small weight is 2-3 kg. those little plastic ones in the gym that make me wanna go HULK SMASH!
ajnin on
I used to lift, still do but now also have to do cardio got lazy and fat.
anyways you should do Deadlifts and squats
I used to love deads, PB is 3 and 1/2 plates. I never liked squats so i was weak on them. I regret not pushing myself in squats
Blüdrayne on
thank you, i am doing squats but not deadlifts atm. i used to hate squats but once i got the hang of them they're ok.
i just got back from the gym, actually. my current programme isnt working out so well. i'm gonna switch to one that is more cardio intensive, have put on too much fat so i'll burn it off first...
Hungry_Mosher on
I lift beers towards my mouth :)
Blüdrayne on
i havent had a beer or a cigarette for 51 days. ;)
i gave it all up for exercise.
BeefCakeAssThrash on
51 days without a beer or sweet nicotine.. damn
metal_thrashing_dad on
As far as the cigerette concern, well done. It's the best for your health. But having a beer from time to time isn't gonna be that bad.
Blüdrayne on
oh, i'm not planning to quit drinking altogether. I'm still ok to have a beer on special occasions. I just dont want to drink for the time being as alcohol does impair muscle recovery.
so yes, i will buy you a beer if i ever see you. :D
TheSomberlain1995 on
i mostly work out with some epic pagan music xD
with some heroic lyrics then i feel strong xD
Blüdrayne on
i havent done that personally. for me its usually death metal or punk.
what bands? would try that...
TheSomberlain1995 on
Ensiferum - Battle Song for example is is highly recomended in my workout playlist. Obscurity - Raubzug der Sugambrer is also very cool but its in german so you maybe don't understand the lyrics but its a good song anyways.
Manegarm - En Fallen Fader is also good for working out
Bands that i can suggest are:
Equlibrium
Obscurity
Taake
Satanic Warmaster
Satyricon
Ensiferum
Manegarm
Wolfchant
Isengard
Finntroll
Windir
SorgSvart
Thyrfing (You have to try Going Berserk and Set Sails to Plunder)
Or Death Metal like:
Dismember
Grave
Entombed
Cannibal Corpse
Vital Remains
Bloodbath
etc.
LikkedbyDeath on
Ensiferum - Lai Lai Hei is my personal favorite. Once the fast part of the song starts, I get this massive SURGE of adrenaline and start pumping like crazy till the end of the song!

yeah, i was actually hoping he would post here when i started this thread. would be cool to talk this kinda stuff with him.

I definitely aim to work out 2-3 times a week, my arms are weak in proportion to my legs.
Blüdrayne on
same here, tbh. i'm having a week's break from classes, so i'm gonna spend most of my time at the gym. my biceps actually grew smaller from my previous exercise routine, unfortunately.
lowriderskin on
I used to be in the gym every night after work or in the morning on my day off right now I weigh 180 lbs but i need to get my ass back in there as I am getting fat! All i gotta say is Lift weights for Satan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Blüdrayne on
;) everyone has their own motivation. whatever yours is, put in effort and you'll do well. your only enemy is yourself.
