New generation of bands

So I was wondering, what do you guys think of bands that have formed since 2003 onward? How do they compare to older bands? I'd love to hear from the older members who've been into Metal since before most of the band members were born.

So any band that formed after 2003 is now of questionable intergrity?
In any artistic medium theres always going to be a few artists who have appeal and the rest will fall short...it was like that for the old scene and its the same today....and this is all relative, you might like something I don't care for and vice versa. Nothing wrong with that, I don't get butthurt if someone doesn't like a band I like.
Personally Im getting tired of old school this and old school that... im more interested in hearing newer bands. there are many older albums from 70s, 80s and 90s that I adore and have great respect for how they influenced the development of this music but I'll be honest I'm bored with the majority of these "classics". I've heard them time and time again, some still resonate with me but more often than not I want to hear something new. Im also not interested in trying to impress older fans by being able to name drop all their favorite bands they grew up with.
I think there are undoubtedly a shit ton of good bands formed after 2003, for myself I'd be more interested in hearing them than revisiting some "essential/classic" dinosaur album for the millionth time.
Sorry for the long post haha I'm just bored with the whole old school vs new school debate, people acting like they need the approval of the older fans before confirming their like or dislike of newer music. Listen to what you like and the hell with what the rest of the scene thinks.

What happened in 2003 for it to become a turning point?

DeathRipper's picture

Just a lot of bands formed during and after 2003.

Kathulex's picture

That still makes no sense. Give me an example of a band formed then that is so influential their year of formation to become a ''turning point.''

Midnight has been very influential, Cauldron helped kick start the new wave of Traditional Metal.

Agreed with Doc. 2003 was not important for metal, However it might be on a personal level.

Metallica release St.Anger!!! Totally one of the best albums they've ever released....Or not...

Sadly 2003 was the year of Bathory's last album!

There was some good albums released though, Also you can not put a set year on when the next generation happened, It is just what genres became more popular at the time.

Kathulex's picture

St.Anger is the best porngrind release of all time, the fuck you talking about?

Nater90's picture

Bitch please....

It is the best Scandinavian Progressive Jazz Vegan Approved Atmospheric Death n' Roll album in the world.

But lets be serious for a moment. While it's a very shitty ''thrash'' record, ironically, it's a pretty good post-hardcore album. If it was released by any post-hc band, it would be praised by hipsters everywhere. I started to kinda like it after looking at it from that viewpoint.

Hahaha, If it was any other band yes people might deem it an amazing album.

I do like Some Kind of Monster personally.

Lots of excellent new bands popping up all around the world. Specially now with the internet and how easy it is to have access to music, you can quickly listen to someone's shitty blackened speed punk Venom ripoff before deciding to waste your money on them. Which, in my opinion, encourages bands to be unique, as they have not only more "competition", but they can also easily be forgotten in a sea of mediocre 80s worship bands. The classics are great, but they were doing something that was unique in their time period. Listen to them, develop your own sound and move on. Don't stagnate the scene.

All throughout the years there has been scenes, trends, eras, Call them what ever you like they're all periods in metal.

Heaps of bands have come and go throughout the years some good, some not so good.

As I quite often post on here it will always come down to "each to their own" some people don't want to move on from what they treasure or what brings back good memories.

Nisse always springs to my mind when it comes to different eras and genres forming etc (Not that he's super old but the man has lived), The man is a living legend and if I ever get to meet him I'm buying him several beers to tell me stories! He grew up / lives in Sweden home of many amazing Black Metal & Death Metal acts that us younger generations love and think are awesome, But he appreciates a lot of the newer bands to which is fucking cool!

Whether you like the bands from 2003 on wards or not, They were all inspired by what came before them, Some copy / mimic the sound because they can't find their own unique sound to be different, Some can and do something amazing with it.

Listen to what ever the fuck you want, Just enjoy it for yourself.

Lots of great post-2003 bands lol. Skeletonwitch, White Wizzard, Bongripper, Wolves in the Throne Room, Torche, Midnight, Venomous Maximus, Noisem...the list goes on.

I don't think there has been only one trend since 2003, so I think this is a weird question. Several cool bands were formed, like Midnight, Enforcer, Deathhammer, Children of Technology and Blüdwülf, but also shit bands that try to be cool, like Skeletonwitch, Kvelertak and Skull Fist. There is also of course the ever present Modern Metal™, which I'm not even going to comment on.

Enforcer... Do I need to say more?

New generation of bands rehashing old riffs by far better bands.

Brymir, Bucovina, Elderwind, Eluveitie, Essence, Ezophagothomia, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Discreation, Disgusted, Dust Bolt, Havok, Heidevolk, Iron Reagan, Municipal Waste, Nervecell (first full-length released in 2008), Nervosa, Nucleator, Placenta Powerfist, Spreading Hate, The Unguided, Toxic Holocaust (first full-length released in 2003), Übermensch, Бездна Анального Угнетения - these are the new bands I really like. Still I don't understand why 2003 is so special. Why not after 2000?
