I don't like Amorphis' cover of Light My Fire.
Not big on Massive Attack's cover of it either- actually I haven't come across a cover of that song that I enjoy.
Anyway Death's cover of Painkiller is pretty cool- though the best that comes to mind is Moonsorrow's cover of For Whom the Bell Tolls- mainly because it's done in a Moonsorrow style but works perfectly and is just fucking good.

I'm putting myself out on a limb here, but I would say that hating Cradle of Filth / Dimmu Borgir, etc is a "peer pressurized" form of self-validation. I think hating these bands, strictly because "everyone hates" them is stupid. I have listened to COF since the mid 90s, and own every release. Too many people think that if they say that they love Cradle they will be seen as less metal than anyone else. I am 41 years old, and could care less about being seen as "cool". I listen to what I love. Fuck other people's opinions about what they think I should listen to.

Well-said. I agree on all counts. Im an older metal fan as well, so Ive seen bands come and go and bands change thru the years. Ill never condemn a band for getting some money and giving the fans greater production values. I will condemn them for changing styles to suit current trends ( ie, when some metal bands started adopting a "grunge" sound in the early 90s and then getting a "nu metal " sound in the late 90s ). Cradle and Dimmu are very cool bands and not at all deserving of all the bashing they get.

Favorites: Iced Earth's cover of "Electric Funeral" by Black Sabbath, Rhapsody [of Fire]'s cover of "The Power Of Thy Sword" by Manowar, MoonSorrow's cover of "For Whom The Bell Tolls" by Metallica, and Nightwish's cover of "High Hopes" by Pink Floyd.
Least favorites: Korn's cover of "One" by Metallica (it will never cease to amaze me how they could take such an awesome song and make it sound so shitty. How they can take such a grim and tragic song and make it sound so soft and boring.). And there was some hardcore punk band whose name I can't remember that took a giant shit on "Wrathchild" by Iron Maiden. And then there was Death's cover of "Painkiller" by Judas Priest. Don't care much for Chuck's vocals on that one...

-Repugnant - Another Vision (Morbid cover, an unknown song that deserves to get heard again).
-Sodom - Turn Your Head Around (Tank cover, perfectly shows how much NWOBHM influenced thrash and how thin the line is when Sodom plays an NWOBHM song. Those covers Metallica has done are nothing compared to this.)
-Judas Priest - Better By You, Better Than Me (Spooky Tooth cover, way better than the original one, actually one of my favorite songs played by Judas Priest).
