Ever dealt with assholes that think what you wear is "fashion" when it's really the aesthetic?

In my view, there is a HUGE difference between aesthetic and fashion. For example, tons of biker gangs all wear their denim vests, leather vests, etc with their top and bottom rockers on the back representing their chapter and that's called aesthetic. It's the representation of that culture and lifestyle. It basically says "hey this is us, this is what we are and we are damn proud of it!". It's something that lasts for more than a few decades in my view. it's something with merit, value and more than just an article of clothing. It's very personal another wards. But, fashion is something that comes and goes over a relative short period of time. A proper idea of the aforementioned would be the following: "hey, wearing baseball caps backwards is in but wearing them the usual way is out". Has anyone here ever dealt with any pricks or prick as such? I'm pretty sure some of you have some interesting stories. So, fire away!

LaUlvenDrepe

I don't know, I'm trying to think back to remember such an incident when I'm sure I had to deal with dumbasses like those, but it's hard for me to remember problems that deal with this "issue" because I'm someone that tends to tune out morons, and also small problems of this nature.

It's something I try to do because if I payed attention to every small problem and took what people say about me or my looks too seriously I would probably go fucking insane. I live in a big city, and it's rare the times that I don't get strange looks when I go out, or get yelled at by some passing car or something. I looked even weirder in high school and I got a lot of shit then, so I guess I just learned to tune things out, or else I'd risk going to prison for killing someone over rage or something.

All I can say regarding this is that I don't let "fashion" influence me in the least bit, the same goes for the other side of the spectrum... the radical stupidity of TRYING so hard to look strange so that you don't fit in anywhere. If I dress strange or look strange, believe me I am not trying to be, I just am. So if I like something, I don't pay attention to what's in style or not, I just wear it because I am an individual.

IronMason

Well personally, I do my best to give no fucks ever.

But this one time, this guy I knew said "Why do you dress like that?". I'll save you the details, but he was just being a prick and probably just wanted to see my response( but I didn't let him get to me :P). That's all bullies ever want, just a response.

and another thing. I wouldn't call a battle veest, jeans, black shirts, and shoes"fashion". Either way, what you wear is your decision
clothes are clothes
people are people
bullies gonna bully
hatters gonna hate
potatters gonna potate

whiteravenmetal

LOL!! potatters gonna potate

Blüdrayne

technically there is a metal "fashion" with trends and so on.
Like the huge retro-thrash fad, and so on...
but anyway...
why dont you guys just stay away from idiots like that?
or make them go away?
then you wont have any problems like this.

BlueEyedBeast

In my school years, a few people would ask me why I always wore black. To which I would respond "what the fuck is it to you?".

DoctorDeath

Johnny Cash wrote a song about exactly that..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoFbCaydiGE

Blüdrayne

johnny cash is an awesome musician! rip.

DoctorDeath

these days i try to ignore even thinking about it, i know for metal, that people who arent into it, will just move on in a few years, it's fashion for them now.. but later.. eh :D

Pickels25

I tell others who attempt to criticize how i dress to screw themselves. Allthough once some hipster fag told me that he and his friends once made a vest and ever since they did it metalheads stole their idea of a battlejacket. Lol @ hipster dumbasses

meaningless

lol funny story dude :P

ghouljamboree

Unfortunately, studded leather jackets and punk/metal looking clothing seems to be the "thing" right now. like that Toxic Vision cunt who puts a Morbid Angel patch on a studded leather jacket and sells it for over $500. this is why I'm more irritated than flattered when someone who obviously has no clue who Venom is compliments my vest.

Blüdrayne

i think the person who does toxic vision is actually a metal fan, at least... not sure though...

ghouljamboree

I don't think a legitimate metal fan would cater to rich fashionistas and Lady Gaga.

Blüdrayne

i dont know, really... depends on how you define a "legitimate metal fan". but either way, i have no idea whether or not and it hardly matters anyway.

ghouljamboree

someone who genuinely cares about the music? someone who doesn't want to see it used as a fashion accessory for someone who doesn't care about the music? Matters to me.

Plague

Hadn't heard of them before, but after looking them up came to a few conclusions: 1) Damn...some really hot pics on that site. 2) They make clothing for some ppl in the rock industry, so prob cater to their interests in bands 3) May have lost the balance between fashion and metal. They ARE a clothing line, but if they could be 50% about music and 50% about fashion it would seem fair...however, looks like their about more than 50% in the fashion area.

MoreNecromansy

The chick who runs Toxic Vision is Jackie Slaughter's girlfriend/fiance/wife from Skullfist and I quite honestly don't think she's into the music at all and it's probably his influence. Anyone willing to pay that much money for something that obnoxious is insane in my opinion.

blackstar1965

You know what doesn't go out of style?
The looks of shock or terror on old ladies faces when I pull up next to them at traffic lights. Sometimes they lock their doors.
Priceless.

I prefer to be left alone by the general public. If they came up to me, it's likely the conversation would be awkward and will end shortly anyway. Being an old fuck and not in school, or other such environment of forced socialization, I have an easier time ignoring people.
I couldn't care less about what my clothing makes people think or say.

Ironbound

As a high school student I get shit all the time.

ToxikAssault

I look like blonde & tubby Joey Ramone and people constantly ask what style I'm supposed to be presenting. Goddamit, I present my self!

The_Black_Sleep

All I ever get is hood/ghetto kids telling me that my shirts are "fresh" but I highly doubt they know its a band and just dig the art work, they're never assholes about it though.

ManOboy

some guy asked me if i was in a gang cause he saw me talking with other metalheads wearing their vests too. also cops have asked me if i was in a gang cause of my jacket.

Blüdrayne

its not a gang...
its a global brotherhood!

TThrasher

I usually don't care. Although that the battlejacket became a fashion item really bugs me. Hipsters walking around with vests covered with hello kitties, spongebobs, and patches of bands that either suck, or they really don't even know. Usually both. I'm having homicidal thoughts already.

Claudandus

I just recall that Daria episode "Trough a Lens Darkly", where Daria get contactlenses and starts to obsess over if she's a hypocrite for wearing them.
I feel the same about this. I don't buy my t-shirts to make a statement(fashion or other), if I se a nice shirt by a band I like. Of course I want it. And there is some degree of vanity there, but I see no harm in it. Even if my idea of dressing differs from most other peoples. I still wanna dress in a way that make me feel good looking.
It's hard to say this without sounding like a fasionvictim. But my reason for wearing band merch is of course because a love of the band. But also because it's a nice shirt.

NeedToKill

No one ever fucks with me :(

From going through her Facebook page, it seems that the Toxic Vision chick really likes the music as well. She also designs stuff for actual BANDS and made an appearance at Bloodstock. I get the jist that she really likes Warbringer and Skull Fist as well. Not to be rude or anything but it really puts a big hole in some of these arguments. Even though she doesn some stuff that some don't agree with, she's not a corporate cash cow like Wal-Mart or Hot Topic. Just a person with some different ideas. Sure I don't like Dimmu Borgir (one of the bands shes designed stuff for) but some folks do. Who are we to say? Personally, I wouldn't ever buy anything like that but it would make me a "capitalist" prick to tell people "NO, you WILL wear this instead". It's their choice and their life, not mine. As much as I have a problem with religion itself I nearly want to go apeshit on folks that treat it as such. But, this is not the All Metal Forums, so I won't do that. What's not fashion to one person is fashion to the next. What's true to one is false to the other. It can NEVER be fact. It is opinion. What I am saying right now is my opinion and I'm OK with that. This world is going to crap. That's all stuff is anymore. It's who has the better crap! (politics, music, religion, way of dress, you fucking name it) Opinion, not fact! In term, all of this stuff we so greatly cling on to will disappear before our very eyes one day when we go to meet the reaper himself. None of us are immortal. Nothing on this earth is. Nothing can truly stand the test of time. To think something can is based on the pure arrogance of humanity. Time moves on and does not give a rats ass about us or anyone for the matter. So, if people don't want anything to truly do with fashion then it's best that they not wear ANY clothes at all and go outside naked. Just try to not get arrested. Wearing a trash bag or a plain white t-shirt is considered fashion to some. Everything is in some way. We may bitch about it now but not everyone will be able to have the same shit they do now as they get older. Some folks may loose their vest and some may get too fat to even wear it or just plain don't care about that anymore as their concentration is more on the music. Things change and people change. There's NOTHING anyone can do to stop that. Plain and simple. Hey, just look at Wagner Lamounier (ex-Sarcófago)! He doesn't care to dress they way he used to anymore and now works at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte, Brasil as a professor in economic science . That was then and it was best left in the past for his sake. He still likes metal but REFUSES to be apart of the life style anymore. Is he a sellout? FUCK NO! What have these little twats that think they're so "trve" done for the metal scene to really make an impact? The answer is NOTHING! He has more balls (along with Fenriz) than most in the metal scene nowadays. Now Max Cavalera, that guy is a sellout in my view but I won't get into that right now. Regardless of Wagner's position on certain issues (homosexuality and whatnot), I still have a lot of respect for the man. Waking up to some of my bull and ego problems I've had has somewhat made me a happier individual as well. It has in turn made me a better metal fan and feel less like an asshole. I guess my position has drastically changed here. Basically, shit happens. Boo fucking hoo! That post was then and this is now. That's all I have to say.

"Shave Your Head"- Sarcófago

All these yars passed,
had showed us the same facts.
Drugs and booze are giving the sign
to the life of millions of young souls,
that are rotting their brains,
with cocaine entering up in their noses.

Long hairs is not more,
a mark of the braves.
It became just a fashion,
and had lost it's anger.

Alcohol in their guts, tatooing their arms.
The orgy goes night after night,
acting like bastards, to show their uprising.
Stop this while you still got time!!!
Drugs will not make better your stupid life.
Long hair will not give you force to live.
Tatooing your ass will not turn you into batman.
Alcohol is not the chemistry of happiness.

All these years passed,
had showed us the same facts.
Drugs and booze are giving the sign
to the life of millions of young souls,
that are rotting their brains,
with cocaine entering up in their noses.

Alcohol in their guts, tatooing their arms,
the orgy goes night after night.
Acting like bastards to show their uprising.
Stop this while you still got time.

Put some kind of sence, in your empty souls.
Stop to waste your life with void.
I have shaved my hair and my hate, had increased.

This way of life will just destroy you!!!

CxMxD

I think if your white shoes and clothes overpower your music, your a Fashion poser,In that case it would be fashion because theres nothing for the shoes or shirts to represent about you, they are litterally Just clothes..... but if your a true metalhead, and you got songs and bands, and your a part of the scene....Then all those things (vest, white hi tops, bullet belts) are aesthetic because they are Representing your lifestyle.

Glad you enjoy. The 2nd poster is from their gig in Potsdam on May 2nd 2010. It was fantastic, but it was a hell of a trip, it took me 6 hours to get there by train, the concert was on a sunday, I traveled back to berlin after the concert, went to some bars and after that took a train back home, arrived and went straight to university to not miss the lecture about theoretical mechanics. Totally worth it.
